First, make a list of the health insurance options that are available to you, including private insurance and/or employer/government provided plans. And, family needs should be considered before making a final selection.

Government plans that are available may be offered on a local, state or national level. Medicare and the ObamaCare are examples a health insurance plan offered on a national level. Medicare benefits are available to those over 65 years of age, and also to people with disabilities. Other government health insurance programs include: Medicaid, the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, health care benefits for the veterans and military, as well as eligible American Indians.

If using private health insurance, it is important to consider all the details of the specific contract. It is especially to read all the information pertaining to exclusions, in order to avoid surprises when seeking care. Keep a copy of your contract for your records, if using private insurance. Make sure that everything is listed correctly and pay close attention to the coverage period. If going to the trouble and expense of getting covered, you want to make doubly sure that there are no surprises.
